Tracking post-dated cheques
Keep an eye on cheques you've received or issued and their due dates — and where the money is actually recorded.
The Cheque register helps you keep track of post-dated cheques — ones you've received from customers or issued to suppliers — as they move through their life: pending → deposited → cleared (or bounced). You can see at a glance what's due soon and how much is tied up in live cheques.
Where the money is recorded
The register is a tracker, on purpose — it does not post to your accounts by itself. That's because a cheque on its own doesn't say what it's for. To record the money correctly, book it where it belongs:
- A customer pays you by cheque — record it as a payment on their sale/invoice, choosing a cheque or bank payment method. That moves the money into your bank account in the books.
- You pay a supplier by cheque — record it as a payment on their purchase/bill the same way.
Use the register alongside that to watch due dates and follow up on anything that bounces. This keeps your books accurate (no cheque counted twice) while still giving you the full cheque picture.
