How to handle a failed online payment

Web Updated Aug 2026

Most failed online payments are on the customer’s side — a declined card or an abandoned checkout — not your store. A failed payment simply means no completed order, so nothing is charged or reserved.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the order statusCheck the order — a payment that failed leaves the order incomplete/unpaid, so it isn’t fulfilled.
  2. Ask the customer to retryThey can retry with another card/method, or you can offer cash on delivery if you support it.
  3. Check your payment method setupIf every payment fails, re-check your payment method setup.
